Mission to Mars

So we are now on day 42 of the lock down/quarantine/shelter in place hostage crisis. In our casa we have set into a routine. I work from home in the downstairs family room, my wife has her office in a converted bedroom on the third floor and daughter has the main floor for online school, online ballet, on line theater and on line school. During the day we are all busy. By afternoon I am knocking off and getting in my run, wife at some point does yoga and Daughter keeps on with her busy online life, adding in a workout and Phineas and Ferb binge watching. Dinner by 7 or 8, followed by reading or writing and more Phineas and Ferb in the living room till bed time. In between we walk the dog.

Weekends are cleaning and laundry and more running and reading and home and garden projects.  Add in some binge watching of TV and games, and you pretty much have our lives. Oh, and I am addicted to the Sister Fidelma mysteries. 7th century Irish Nun who solves mysteries. I think this weekend I may also binge watch Discovery season 2.

My current favorite metaphor for this life is "Mission to Mars". Think about it. Most of the current plans have people living in a small space for months as they make the transit. There is some kind  of artificial gravity.  Small living and working space.  A lot of time in front of LCD screens interacting with your work, ship control etc. Time to make meals, time for required exercise and then some scheduled downtime focused on video, books etc.

Except for the fact that I have a garden ( well so do some of the ships) and I can walk the dog in the local park (treadmill with wrap around video??) it is pretty much the same.

So live in COVID is training for a Mars Mission at least the transit part.

It also reminds me of the move  The Martian. Matt Damon's character's last speech rings true. Basically, you are faced with a huge problem and you start by solving the first one, then the next one, and so on  until you get home. It seems to  be good advise at this time.
